Certified Hand Therapist Avon, CT

What is a Certified Hand Therapist?

So what is a CHT?

The term Certified Hand Therapist to most is slightly misleading!  Therapists with this advanced degree are actually highly trained in treating any problem related to the upper extremity, not just the hand.    In order for therapists to obtain this title they must demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in treatment of the upper extremity, meet rigorous standards and pass the intensive certification examination.  Then in order to maintain this certification Certified Hand Therapists must re-certify every five years and demonstrate extensive continued professional development.

According to the Hand Therapy Certification Commission scope of practice 2009 “Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It is a merging of occupational and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity. Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual’s ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations.”   Read more here.

A Certified Hand Therapist is able to rehab patient’s pre-operatively, they are a perfect fit for post-operative care due to their extensive knowledge of the surgical interventions that are provided in the upper extremity and provide extensive preventative care/education.
